Proposing the concept of building a deep water seaport project in Ben Tre province

On the morning of October 2, 2020, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Phan Van Mai, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Cao Van Trong, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Truc Son co-hosted a working session with DonaCoop Group on the group's proposal for investment project and funding support to formulate investment schemes in the province. The guests delegation was led by Mr. Bui Thanh Truc, President of the Board of Directors and General Director of DonaCoop Group.

At the working session, the consulting company Royal Haskoning DHV (the Netherlands) gave a preliminary presentation on the concept of a complex of urban area - tourism services - industry - deep water seaport in Binh Dai, Ba Tri, Thanh Phu districts, Ben Tre province. The Southern Institute for Spatial Planning presented issues relating to planning for the Mekong Delta region and its connection to the Ho Chi Minh City region. Nha Vui Group presented the idea of a general planning for a sea encroachment urban area.

According to the concept, Ben Tre's deep water seaport and urban area would be planned with about 20 thousand hectares of industrial zone, equivalent to about 25% of the area of current industrial zones in Viet Nam; 20 thousand hectares of urban and resort area, which would be separated from the port area and the industrial zone. The province's sea encroachment planning, with preliminary objective of 20 thousand hectares of industrial zone and deep water seaport, includes a 9-kilometer length of harbor.

At the working session, the two sides exchanged ideas, proposals and the province's orientations in the development of marine economy; agreed on funding for project formulation and investment in the province, and implementing related works.

Appreciating the investor's project concept, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Truc Son requested the investor to coordinate with the consulting unit to specify ideas, plannings, in which lists of investment projects should be clearly stated, and plannings should be reviewed to create harmony in the socio-economic development of the province.

Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Cao Van Trong said that it was necessary to clearly define what the project objectives were and what would be produced and contributed to the development of the province in the future once the project were implemented. At the same time, he suggested DonaCoop Group and consulting units research and redevelop options to ensure feasibility.

Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Phan Van Mai said Ben Tre leadership were very determined to exploit the seaward space to open up new space and more opportunities for the development of the province. The Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee suggested the investor do deep researches on the market, the geology, the soil, the land and the flow, etc as a basis to formulate a suitable plan. At the same time, it was necessary to take into account the benefits as well as negative effects to people in coastal areas as well as the interests of investors who were having investment projects in the project area, he added.
